NEW FOCUS WITH FUZZY VIDEO

Watch the video and then read about the ingredients behind the making.....

I had the privilege to speak with Paul Saunders (manager) of The Fuzz Band . To speak about their latest video "You don't know me..."

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR THE VIDEO? WERE THERE ANY VISUAL CUES THAT YOU LEANED ON?
The inspiration for the video came from two different sources. The first being the tendencies that people have to make unfair and inaccurate judgments on others based on their visual interpretation. They use what they see to make assumptions on your character and personality. People hear and see what they want to, and they try to tear you down based on false assumptions.

The second and more prevalent theme in the video was from the music industry standpoint. The business has become a factory of sorts where they are hard pressed to churn out this product and fill a need without bothering to find out anything about the artist. They have a round hole to fill, and they are willing to jam the artists into this hole whether they fit or not.

WHERE WAS IT SHOT?
The video was shot in the historical Attucks Theater and The Naro Theater in downtown Norfolk.

WHO DIRECTED IT?
The video was directed by Shiny Nickel Productions.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PROBLEMS THAT YOU INCURRED WHILE SHOOTING?
We didn’t encounter too many problems during the process; everything ran relatively smoothly. I guess I would have to say that the hardest part was coordinating times schedules for the locations, crew, extras, and hair & makeup (who flew in from LA).

HOW DOES DID THIS SHOOT AND STYLE DIFFER FROM YOUR LAST VIDEO?
Our previous video; Confidence, was much lighter in it’s visual and subject matter. Confidence is motivational and encouraging, while You Don’t Know Me is very dark. It has a more reflective and defiant tone.

HOW MUCH HAS DOING VIDEOS HELPED WITH SHAPING THE DIRECTION OF THE BAND?
The video is an amazing tool for placing a face with a name. We have a lot of people who visit our sites and download our music from various locations across the globe. The video creates a more personal experience for our listeners, and allows them to get a glimpse into our personalities.
The music video is also an amazing tool that every artist can use to put his or her thoughts and inspirations into a visual format. It is always nice for people to make their own interpretations on a song and how it may apply to their lives, but it’s also nice for people to know where the true inspiration came from. Most people assumed after hearing You Don’t Know Me, that I was speaking of a failed relationship. For me, it was ALWAYS about judgment from music critics because this is something that I dealt with for years prior to joining the band. Now everyone knows…

WHAT ARE SOME JEWELS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DROP ABOUT DOING VIDEOS?
In doing videos, it is great to have a good team of individuals surrounding you; from the director to the make up artists; and the set designers to the extras. These people are helping you to interpret your vision so they have to be fully on board in order for the vision to be successful.

The instrumentation of the band is:

Instrumentation
K' Bana Blaq - Vocals
Nakia Madry - Vocal
Michon David - Vocals
Duane Smith - Trumpet
John Stratford - Bass
Jason J - Drums
Boo Britt - Drums
Kasey Square - Keys

Let us know what your comments are of the video and the song.... Tell a friend 2 tell a friend so we can BUILD!!!

UPTOWN HEAT,....

THE SUMMER HAS JUST STARTED BUT THE "HEAT" IS UP FULL BLAST THIS WEEKEND. I MUST TO CHECK OUT COURTESY OF "SOUNDS OF ART".

NAME = YOUR MOST PRECIOUS JEWEL

Here are the ingredients to a great NAME.

Who: A wiggly design collective started by French Crisp and Waspy Steven and a host of enablers called ‘Famous NAMES’.

Why: Progressive streetwear from several labels got good, so progressive
street kids copped it. Then the brands got cocky, and then they got expensive, too expensive for progressive street kids, and that’s when those brands became stupid. We’re for people who are anti-stupid.

How: NAME was born in a tattoo parlor on the Lower East Side, NYC. The tattoo artist had simply left the word ‘NAME’ on their sample drawing of the distinctive ‘I love Mom’ tattoo which incorporates a ribbon over a heart. It was striking how a meaningless graphic could be imbued with such life-long personal meaning just by adding the individual. The NAME ribbon is therefore a platform for expression that is given meaning by the individual who owns and displays it.

I am not even going to lie,.... I ripped the pics from their site, but could u blame me!!!

VISITING THE VAULT (HARLEM STYLE)

Staying "Fresh Dressed" is a Harlem staple and the VAULT (located at 2498 Frederic Douglass Blvd, Harlem) is a place to definitely get an account of some of the coolest brands out right now. Upon entering this hip haberdashery you can't help but feel like you just stumbled upon a secret stash. I sat down with Wayne real quick to look at the plans for his upcoming build out (sorry no pics Wayne has those under lock and key). Below are some pics of the store right now:

Search no longer,..... Rep making his way to some goods.

Product for days to keep you Dapper (... hey where's Dan?)

Wayne posting up infront of the imfamous "Wall of fame" (IN4MATION)

If you only use your head as a hat rack then this is the wall for you.

On to the correct train I had to take a pic of the local part (that is just 1 block away from the VAULT).

Definitely worth the trip uptown!!!!

Photos on the way to the Vault....

Took these while trying on the N train platform on Astoria Blvd. On the way to the Vault in Harlem. Little did I know that Rep and I would take the wrong train up there and walk in the hot sun....on 125th Street.

Took some flicks during our walk down 125th Street....

After our cross town trek,....we finally made it.

Betcha' we won't take the wrong train again!!!

FRESH OUTTA' REHAB

Below is a sneak preview of the line my friends Pete and Rajah have started. Colors are yet to be finalized but they figured to give the world a preview of what we have in store for everyone. The shirts will only be available on the Fresh Outta Rehab website.

Below is a a few words about the concept of the line and what they were thinking.

“The theme of the clothing resolves around addiction. Almost everyone is addicted to something (ie drugs, shopping, shoes, fitteds, etc…) and we played off that in this collection. Just to give you some insight on our thought process, the first shirt is a play on the pharmaceutical logo, the crack vial shirt was inspired by the biggie’s famous verse, “Either you slingin’ crack rock or you got a wicked jump shot.” Not all of our shirts will be theme based. Its going to be a nice mix once we get everything rolling along. Some shirts in the future wont have the name blazed on the chest like it is now. Our intent was to get the name out, and let people know that we’re here. I think we’ve done that with this initial run without being too basic or too in your face.”

(the above is quoted from Rajah's blog site.

It is built for lovers of kicks, fitted and limited edition items. Let me know what you all think of the project.....

A DIFFERENT VIEW OF THE BIG APPLE

I took a quick trek up to the APPLE store with my camera, just messing around with the zoom and built in flash. I didn't want to just take the regular shots of the store (even if they weren't Glamor Shot quality pics). Hey sometimes you have to take in the city from a different angle!!! Let me know what you think....

I was standing right in front of the APPLE store when I took this.

I crossed the street for this one,... if you look i the distants you can see that same gold statue. I don't know who he is but he has to be famous because not even Washington has a gold statue up at Washington Sqr Park.

Out in fornt of the store and I just looked up,.... Dont front that is probably some good living up at the top!

I had to take another flick of the "Golden Man".

From inside the Apple store,... hitting that zoom action.

Slight tilt and totally different angle,... wow so simple it is (that was my Yoda talk).

Hellz Bellz X The Museum Group X Atmos

Earlier this week I recently sat down with Julie Lee the sales rep for HELLZ BELLZ (via the Museum Group (1 of the most sort after sales agencies)). She is a hip brand manager with a couple of fingers of the pulse of the ever evolving Street wear/ Youth Culture market. Her history in the game is not just helping to get the numbers up for one of the hottest brands on the scene....

PEL: How did you luck up upon your current position?

Julie: Well, my previous experience and COMPLEX and Atmos kind of allowed me to network in this industry. A friend of mine had gotten an email from Dre (of the Museum Group) that he was looking for an additional salesrep. My friend felt that I was a good fit for the job so they forwarded it to me. Essentially it was my back in the days networking that got me here.

PEL: So what did u do at ATMOS?

Julie: I assisted the creative director. I did everything for him, I went to the trade shows, I helped him pick out products. I was like his third hand.

P: What about COMPLEX??

J: I assisted the fashion editor for 10 months and I helped on photo shoots, product placement in the magazine. I assisted the sneaker editor. It was fun

P: You said just 10 months at COMPLEX?

J: Yeah,... It started out as a 3 month internship, but I stayed for a while because I enjoyed being there. They were compensating me a little bit and it was a hot place to be.

P: I remember you telling me that you also worked at L.A.M.B. When you left COMPLEX is that when you went there?

J: No after COMPLEX I went to ATMOS. I stayed there a little while, then I went to L.A.M.B.

P: How was L.A.M.B.?

J: It was ok, but it was a hand bag division. It was licensee and Mr. Tim Schifter owned it....

P: What was the name of the company?

J: It was called Schifter & Partners . He owned LeSportsac and sold it. Then he got the rights to produce HARAJUKU LOVERS , L.A.M.B., and Jill Stuart. I also heard that he is also doing NINA RICCI handbags as well.

P: So what did you do over there?

J: Just a lot of assisting.

P: Did you go overseas?

J: No. I assisted alot of the departments and divisions.

P: Were you still networking and stuff while being in there?

J: Yes it gave me the opportunity to network with people in a different sector of the fashion industry. People that were not associated with the street culture. I got to meet alot of department store buyers. At times I was so conscious of what I was wearing to work, because it was a very image conscious atmosphere. You had to be very polished everytime that you entered the showroom. I remember one day I wore some Jordans to work and I felt out of place. It was really, really weird so I ran out the office and bought a pair of new shoes and came back.

P: How do you feel the atmosphere is of the Street wear industry?

J: Well this industry is way more laid back, because it is driven by young people. I kknow that the investors tend to be older, but the people that run the scene are all young. They are really hip, they are really happening. You know the workign atmosphere is laid back but people still work really hard.

P: What is a little jewel that you would drop to give people a better undersatnading about sales and what you do?

J: I feel like in sales your main goal is to understand the product and to deliver it to the buyers. The key is to deliver it to the right buyers. So where ever you place your product is going to determine the image of your product. That is a big part of sales. If you have a super cool product you don't to put it in all of the urban stores, because then degrades the integrity of the brand. So as the sales person you have to really push your product in the right direction while keeping the numbers up. Some people don't want their numbers up.

P: Why wouldn't they want their numbers up?

J: Because they don't want the product to be to saturated in the market. Especially in this culture, because everything is based on limited edition and exclusivity.....

We then got interrupted by the alarm of the emails coming to her inbox. Betcha' it was more HELLZ BELLZ orders.

Ohhhh did I mention she plays the cello and piano...

HYPNOTIC,..... LIVE IN STEREO

Timesquare had and eargasmic treat over the weekend. The HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE was live and direct in (((STREREO))). The band hails from Chicago, but there sound is nothing short of resonating world wide appeal. It is great to hear something that can satiate the appetite for some good home "cooking"!

They had a $15 CD for sale vs my last $8 that I had in my pocket. Long story short I found myself beating feet to Micky Dees on 42nd St to goto there 99¢ ATM (McCapitalism at its finest) to make that purchase. What a good purchase it was.

Ohhhhh yeah BATMAN was on the scene,.... entertaining the crowd with the "BATOOSIE". Only in New York people. Same BAT time, same BAT channel.

5th annual Hip-Hop Odyssey International Film Festival

Over the weekend I popped over to BB Kings for the 5th annual Hip-Hop Odyssey International Film Festival. Many of Hip Hops legends were on deck to give tribute to counterparts and independent hip hop film makers. Paul Mooney and Dr.Roxanne Shante were the host for the night. Some of the patrons and presenters included Fab 5 Freddy, Cold Crush Brothers, Grand Wizard Theodore, Lady Pink, Crash Crew, Ralph McDaniels, Peeblee Poo, Ernie Paniccioli and Ice-T.

The AWESOME 2 spun for the event.... classic material!

Paul Mooney kept the crowd going and even had to chop down a heckler or two!!!

Ice-T was presented with the Trailblazer award by Ernie Paniccioli (if Ernie hasn't taken your picture then you aint make it yet in hip hop!!!!)

Charlie Ahearn of Wild Style was presented and award by Fab 5 Freddy and Henry Chalfant of Style Wars,...... dope!!!!

This is what hip hop is really about,.. I didn't take a bunch of flicks because I was spending so much time enjoying the show. They had spoken workd, beat boxing, freestyles (with Supernatural doing his patented interactive freestyle, where he rhymes about any thing and everything that you pull out of your pockets!!!!

For info on events like this you can subscribe to TOOLS of WAR newsletter.

TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN BBQ

Rhandy from IN4MATION was all smiles when he and I were kicking it about our terrace side "TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN" BBQ yesterday.

Of course he was all smiles, especially when I told him that I knew where to get some free grills at most local grocery stores and super-centers!!!

For some reason he wasn't feeling the grill.

I don't think that he was feeling the "some assembly required" part!!!

MAKE SURE THAT YOU GET THE METAL ONE,... THE PLASTIC ONE'S DON'T DO SO WELL!!!

CHEEEEEEEEEEEEE HUUUU!!!

Bullets, Babes and Billions...

Salutations all,...

Not going to get into all of the BLAH, BLAH, BLAH,... Long story short my man REP copped a camera and started a blog. I then told my home girl JULIE about his blog and she was like you should start one. So I pulled out my camera CANON D20 out of my dresser draw(I only had the body), and spent 2 days buying accessories for the damn thing to shoot for this blog.

All in all I dedicate this to all of my family, friends and fellow peers that make this industry that we live in and love continuously move forward without loosing a beat. I am here just to let you know what time it is.....

ciao4now,
