GOING HI & LO

A while back we already gave you a look at a strong line-up of collaborations coming for the Hi & Lo exhibition by Hiroshi Fujiwara and Takashi Murakami. The collaborations included Visvim sneakers, Kangol hats, Head Porter bags, Levi’s Fenom denim and more.


Today we give you a look at some more collaborations that were done for the occasion of the exhibition. There is another Visvim sneaker coming, this time featuring an all-over flower pattern by Takashi Murakami. Furthermore there is a series of t-shirts coming, a collaboration between Kaikai Kiki and Fragment Design. Via Honeyee.

If you were beginning to think that Japanese clothing brand Uniqlo was settling in to business as usual with their US retail presence, November 18 might prove that wrong. Remember back two years ago back two years ago when prior to opening the flagship store in Soho, the company setup a number of shipping containers transformed into popup shops around NYC.


Next month’s event in Times Square will promote the Heat Tech innerwear line. Uniqlo is giving away free Heat Tech items that will be distributed by a ‘Giant Human Vending Machine’ Yes, you read that correctly. Amy Odell of NYMag spoke to a representative at Uniqlo who described what is going to take place.

RIDES Magazine held nothing back when they transformed the interior of a Hyundai Genesis sedan for the upcoming 2008 Speciality Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show...



The RIDES Digital Genesis is a mobile Wi-Fi hot spot capable of supporting 50 simultaneous users. The car has three Mac computers (including a MacBook Air and two Mac minis), an iPod Touch, iPhone 3G, Farenheit DVD player, Genesis amps, Morel Hybrid Ovation speakers and two 12” subs.Backseat passengers cruise in style in suede-upholstered seats with a control console to activate the car’s electronics. The car also has an Apple wireless keyboards perched on flip-down tray tables with 8.4-inch VGA headrest monitors for each passenger. I hope Apple is one of their sponsor.

Including sketches, early cartoons, drawings, greeting cards, sculptures, and more, the retrospective is the most thorough to date spanning the artists career. The show runs until December 7th.. DSLR SEES RED

Sure, the Canon 5D Mark II and Nikon D90's HD video capability is pretty amazing, but since the camera chassis and lenses are a typical DSLR shape, they lack many things in terms of utility for serious movie-makers. And that's where Redrock's "cinematizing" kit comes in.

It's designed to bolt around the camera and adds some serious mounting hardware, proper zoom and focus fine controls and lens hoods to the cameras. It certainly looks like an option to consider if you can't spring for a high-end Sony or RED cam. And though there's not much more info out there yet, the kit's supposed to be revealed today at the PhotoPlus event in New York, and the shipping date is rumored as November 1.

Although only a sample pair has been spotted, we look forward to 2009 for a possible release. MONDRIAN VAN

Born in 1872, Piet Mondrian was and still is, the most renown artist to propagate the art form of De Stijl, or commonly known as Neo-Plasticism, an artistic movement which derived from the ideals of harmony and order. A focus in the majority of Mondrian’s paintings of horizontal, vertical lines, and primary colors.

As a homage to this Dutch master, shoe maker VANS released Modular Authentic, a series of its classic Authentic lace-up based on Mondrian signature painting. Similar to the Nike Dunk Low Premium SB (Mondrian Edition) launched earlier this year, the VANS Modular Authentic also includes the identical bold strokes of black outlines on an all white background, along with interjection of accents in primary colors of yellow, red, and blue. VANS also took the liberty to create several other not based on the original colorways. The VANS - Modular Authentic, inspired by Mondarian, is currently available at selected VANS dealers, including FLAUGE branch within the ZOZOTOWN shopping network.

The car boasts a 150 mile range off its 35 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, can hit 62 mph in 8.5 seconds, and does a full charge off of an included high current charging station in a mere 2.5 hours. BMW plans on leasing 500 of these to commercial and private customers in California, New York and New Jersey sometime early 2009.

LEGO X FERRARI F1 RACE CAR

Some folks with a whole lot of time on their hands made Another Lego creation that will have you scratching your head. Here is a look at the F1 car made from 80,000 Lego bricks to help promote the annual 'Lego World' event in Holland. The bright red car was actually driven by a local TV presenter on the streets of Amsterdam. Thanks to newlaunches.

Now you can have your cake and eat it too! Corian Illumination Series allows for varying degrees of translucency, so that reliable Corian has suddenly gone glitzy.

Dupont states that the new surfaces “give architects the freedom to create with the most dynamic element of all—light.” When backlit, the five available colors of the Illumination Series change in shade. Mint Ice, Strawberry Ice, Lime Ice, Glacier Ice, and Blueberry Ice begin as pastels, but apply any lighting to these Illumination Series and the colors deepen and change tones, depending on the type of light used. Take Strawberry Ice for example. When dormant, the Corian is simply ballet slipper pink. When lit, Strawberry Ice becomes anything from Pink Tourmaline, with warm peach undertones, to Pink Sapphire, with cool magenta auras. If you use colored lights in your design, then the Illumination Series can transform even more dramatically. Corian wants you to “Design in on.”

From lamps to clothing racks to countertops, of course, the Illumination Series makes virtually any home or commercial project more exciting. The effect of the backlit Corian can be anything from cheery to eerie, from candi-colored pop to ghostly ethereal.



The Illumination Series does have some additional installation considerations that limit its use: it should not be used where the product is exposed to direct sunlight, nor should it be used with or near flames (though it is Class I (A) rated for flammability). When installed, “seam quality is critical…as seams may be more visible when backlit.” In this regard, Corian is helping with its new Translucent White (TW) Corian Joint Adhesive, specially formulated to work with the Illumination Series. Like other Corian products, however, the Illumination Series is certified to the highest level for food contact and the surface does not promote mold, mildew, or bacteria.

If the heat specifications have stumped you, you might “Be Creative,” as the Dupont website instructs—a wet bar or juice bar instead of a kitchen counter perhaps. Even pantries transform into art objects in Corian Illumination, cans and bottles casting supple and angular shadows, morphing in the night into puppets and skylines. Nominated for a Best of the Year 2008 (BOY) Award by Interior Design Magazine in the Architectural & Building Products category, Corian’s Illumination Series deserves your attention—if not your vote. DOZE RATS AT THE LEVINE

Gallerist Jonathan LeVine's concurrent upcoming shows highlight two prominent street artists from opposite sides of the planet, Brooklyn's Doze Green and Blek le Rat from Paris. While the two might not seem to have a lot in common, they're linked by the way they both transform graffiti. 



Doze Green hails from the school of hip hop graffiti, an original member of the Rock Steady Crew coming up on the streets and subways of New York in the late '70s and early '80s. Since, his work has evolved into a form of cubist painting, incorporating both figurative abstraction and letter forms.

With his new show, he presents a series of charcoal drawings and mixed media paintings that pay homage to both his Afro-Caribbean and graffiti roots. The addition of collage to his work adds a new level of consciousness — overall a show not to be missed.




Meanwhile, Blek le Rat (aka Xavier Prou) is one of the first artists to use stencils on the street. He gained fame from spray-painting rats all over Paris in the early '80s. This new show offers several political works, from a laughing man driving a gasoline tank, pointing a finger at our energy crisis, to a painting that reads "BANKSY?" next to a portrait of the invisible man, poking fun at the media frenzy surrounding his identity.

Blek's work is often confused with Banksy's, and he is listed as a major influence to the British artist. There's also plenty of signature work in the new show, his startling black-and-white figures which complement the classical architecture of Europe. The artist's new monograph, "Blek le Rat: Getting Through the Walls" is available on Amazon and Powell's.
